The name Chevrolet comes from a Swiss race car driver and engineer, Louis Chevrolet. He started Chevrolet with the help of William C. Durant of General Motors, who eventually purchased majority stake in the company and performing a reverse merger, which put Chevrolet under the General Motors umbrella.
